Montenegro____Along the Adriatic Coast

Yugoslavia once possessed a sizeable coastline on the Adriatic Sea, but with its break-up in the 1990s most of the shore went Croatia's way. Nonetheless, Montenegro is possessed of some of the most stunning seafront territory in the Balkans, and the Monkey was pleased to have the chance to see some of it. In this photo, the Monkey looks back on part of the Bay of Kotor, a mammoth Adriatic fjord that juts inland several kilometers. The Bay of Kotor is the largest fjord in southern Europe, and many of the villages that grew on its rim were important Venetian settlements. Chief among them is Kotor, which rivaled Dubrovnik in its day, but was devastated by a 1979 earthquake (much of it has since been rebuilt).

Away from the fjord, along Montenegro's sandy-shored Adriatic coast, the Monkey spotted the strange little "island" of Sveti Stefan. For centuries a sleepy fishing village, Sveti Stefan fell into disuse after World War II only to be revived by the Yugoslav authorities in the 1960s as a beach resort. Today the entire "island" (connected to the mainland by a natural land-bridge called a tombola) is a posh, rather exclusive resort. It's still quite a sight, either way, and the Monkey decided to stop by for a photo.

Much of Montenegro's coastline is backed up by mountains. Before heading down to the seaside, the Monkey stopped to admire the scenery. He found Montenegro quite beautiful, and he suspects this photo will help you see why.

The Monkey at the water's edge in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro's vast fjord. Goodbye for now, Montenegro!
