Throughout history, bridges have been important, monumental structures. Though bridge-building techniques have changed drastically over the centuries, the basic concept remains constant: to connect one place to another. In this list, the Monkey highlights a few of the more famous bridges he's had the opportunity to visit.

Pont Adolphe, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Spanning two of the promontories upon which Luxembourg City is perched, the Pont Adolphe's graceful stone arches caused a sensation when it opened in 1903

Trajan's Bridge, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Romania

This Roman-built bridge spanning the wide waters of the Danube no longer exists, but in its day its technological achievement must surely have been as celebrated as some of the other bridges you see here. The Monkey poses by a scale model in this photo.

Dublin's Hapenny Bridge spans the River Liffey in a simple, elegant arch. While by no means the longest span or the largest undertaking, the Hapenny Bridge makes its mark in Dublin like few bridges have elsewhere.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California, United States.

Perhaps the defining symbol of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge stretches across the waters of the San Francisco Bay. Built in 1930s, the simple blood-orange structure of this landmark bridge continues to inspire awe in all who cross it.
