The moody atmosphere of Tierra del Fuego's Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake) is eerily evident in this photo. The Monkey stopped by this serene, shadowy landscape during a trip inland from Ushuaia.

Tierra del Fuego is the opposite end of the earth from the far northern regions of Siberia, Canada's Northwest Territories, and Alaska. And as in those vast, frozen areas, some of Tierra del Fuego's residents have harnessed the locomotive power of teams of dogs. The Monkey paid a visit to a group of huskies being trained as sled dogs. He wasn't sure how happy the dogs were to be towing humans around, but at least the dogs seemed pleased to meet the Monkey. The one in the foreground jumped up to kiss the Monkey just after the picture was taken.

The autumn leaves flaunt their colors by a swamp at the shores of Lago Fagnano, the largest lake on Tierra del Fuego. The Monkey found this remote spot lovely, in large part due to the sunken skiff, a remnant of bygone days.

The Monkey takes in the view from the heights of the Garibaldi Pass. Behind him is the mountain-enclosed Lago Escondido.

Along the shores of Lago Escondido, the Monkey encountered an almost primordial forest, with Spanish moss forming impromptu beards on collapsing trees, their roots weakened by the water-sogged soil.

The Monkey watches some men removing a boat from Lago Fagnano, which stretches across the center of of the island into Chile. After pulling out the boat, water drained from the pickup's cab for close to a minute.
